Tigers Milk
Wer sich fragt, warum ich jüngst so seltsame (i.S.v. untypische) Musik höre. Das liegt an Tigers Milk, einem Label, auf das ich stieß, als ich bei Bandcamp herumsurfte. Ich schrieb glaube ich schon einmal, dass Bandcamp der beste Plattenladen der Welt ist, weil er eben auch zum Stöbern einlädt.
Tigers Milk vertreibt Musik aus Peru und zwar sowohl traditionelle, als auch modernere Klänge. Ich bin vorerst in ersteres vernarrt.

OK, ich hab schon immer auch ein wenig Hiphop gehört und ich hatte auch immer ein paar der guten und besseren Labels (unabhängig vom Genre) parat, aber wenn mir vor einem Jahr jemand erzählt hätte, dass ich (a) im vergangenen Jahr mehr Hiphop als jedes andere Genre gehört hätte und (b) praktisch jeden Release des Labels Mello Music Group blind kaufe, hätte ich dieser Person wohl doch eher einen Vogel gezeigt.
Dieses Interview mit dem Labelgründer Michael Tolle bei Bandcamp (wo die MMG-Veröffentlichungen natürlich auch feilgeboten werden) gibt einen guten Einblick in die Motivation und den Ethos des Labels:
I’ve always defined it internally as music from the heart of American culture. We’ve never gravitated toward thugs or gangsters. Most of our producers and MCs are average people who are talented and a part of this culture. That was appealing to me. I don’t like the lottery of it, people going for broke. I always wanted musicians, people who made beats or started rapping but were trying to become something more — like Oddisee, who’s now a fully fledged musician. To me we are very middle-American. Red Pill, our new guy from Detroit, exemplifies that, and someone like Apollo Brown, who’s very blue-collar.
